What is the reason for requiring a maximum password length? <br alt="" name="" rel="" target="" title="" type="" value="" /><br alt="" name="" rel="" target="" title="" type="" value="" />Maximum length passwords are sometimes a symptom of passwords being stored in plaintext. If you were salting and hashing user-entered passwords before writing them to disk, then it wouldn't matter how many characters a user entered because the result would always be the same fixed number of charters of your hashed output. <br alt="" name="" rel="" target="" title="" type="" value="" /><br alt="" name="" rel="" target="" title="" type="" value="" />For example, visit <a alt="" href="https://passwordsgenerator.net/md5-hash-generator/" name="" rel="nofollow" target="" title="Link httpspasswordsgeneratornetmd5-hash-generator" type="" value="">https://passwordsgenerator.net/md5-hash-generator/</a>. If you enter 10 characters or 1000 characters, your hash will also result in 32 characters. Always. So if your DBA created a column that can only hold 32 characters, and you always hashed all user-inputed characters before writing them to the database, then it wouldn't matter how many characters the user entered because you will always need to store just 32 characters.<br alt="" name="" rel="" target="" title="" type="" value="" /><br alt="" name="" rel="" target="" title="" type="" value="" />But because you have a maximum length, it suggests that you might not be hashing user-entered passwords before storing them, and instead are storing them in plain text.<br alt="" name="" rel="" target="" title="" type="" value="" /><br alt="" name="" rel="" target="" title="" type="" value="" />My security questions are:<br alt="" name="" rel="" target="" title="" type="" value="" /><ol alt="" name="" rel="" target="" title="" type="" value=""><li alt="" name="" rel="" target="" title="" type="" value="">Are you storing passwords in plain text?</li><li alt="" name="" rel="" target="" title="" type="" value="">Are you salting and hashing all user-entered passwords before storing them?</li><li alt="" name="" rel="" target="" title="" type="" value="">If you were issued a lawful subpoena to had over a user-entered password in plain text, would anyone at Citrix be reasonably capable of doing so?</li><li alt="" name="" rel="" target="" title="" type="" value="">Why do you choose to set a maximum length of 50 characters?</li></ol><br alt="" name="" rel="" target="" title="" type="" value="" />Thank you for your time.<br alt="" name="" rel="" target="" title="" type="" value="" /><br alt="" name="" rel="" target="" title="" type="" value="" /> question 0 2 1 create http://m.getsatisfaction.com/topics/7897879 7897879 ShareFile password reset page does not properly state password requirements 2019-06-19T18:42:30Z 2019-06-19T18:42:30Z Jason Pearce http://m.getsatisfaction.com/people/10095189 https://www.gravatar.com/avatar/3594e2fc8c2df1a23eafb5c01abf7d50?d=identicon&s=55&r=PG jason_pearce_eaq5x1vb6dc8b When a user follows the "Forgot Password" process, they are emailed a link to set a new password at <a alt="" href="https://riverview.sharefile.com/Authentication/Login" name="" rel="nofollow" target="" title="" type="" value="">https://riverview.sharefile.com/Authentication/Login</a>. " # $ % ^ &amp; * ( ) - _ + = / . ? \ [ ] | ` ~ @ '<br alt="" name="" rel="" target="" title="" type="" value="" /><br alt="" name="" rel="" target="" title="" type="" value="" />One of these missing requirements (maximum length) is stated here: <a alt="" href="https://support.citrix.com/article/CTX240122" name="" rel="nofollow" target="" title="" type="" value="">https://support.citrix.com/article/CTX240122</a>. But that page makes no mention of what special characters are accepted, which I had to obtain by opening up a support ticket.<br alt="" name="" rel="" target="" title="" type="" value="" /><br alt="" name="" rel="" target="" title="" type="" value="" />Why aren't you also stating the maximum length requirement and the special character requirement on <a alt="" href="https://riverview.sharefile.com/Authentication/Login" name="" rel="nofollow" target="" title="" type="" value="">https://riverview.sharefile.com/Authentication/Login</a> ? Wouldn't stating all password requirements provide a better user experience and fewer support calls?<br alt="" name="" rel="" target="" title="" type="" value="" /><br alt="" name="" rel="" target="" title="" type="" value="" />For example, when I attempted to use "ygmgkuqtekwajpmdsupwrthvxqfasmtmhpgespmfmefHFRKVHYFRMRNGHNVKUXUVUMABHFYRWANKKXACMDYPHWUSTSYRJDA27347349939654?(;-,!::,@:),:?!(-," as my password, it was rejected for what appeared to me as invalid reasons.
