And what could be more fundamental to Quick Base than quickly and accurately entering data?

So many of our customers tell us they come to Quick Base apps because they’ve outgrown spreadsheets and need to move to a relational database to handle the complexity of the work they need to track. Recently, we’ve been taking a hard look at how we can improve this fundamental activity of Quick Base apps: relating data.

What did we find? After talking to customers with big data sets and small, we realized our record picker needed to be better at finding records quickly and making sure users knew exactly what record they were picking!

If you’re not familiar with our record picker, here’s a crash course. (You can find out more about configuring it in Quick Base University.)

When you’re working with a relatively small data set, we show a simple HTML drop down. It works well if you’ve got some easily discernible records and you know what you’re looking for, but if you’ve got a larger set of data, it can be much harder to find what you’re looking for.

Now, one of the things we all love about Quick Base is how deeply customizable it is. So what if I want to only pick from records which meet a certain criteria? Or if I want to make sure the most likely to be picked options are at the top? Quick Base has a solve for that! In the form properties, you can choose a report on which to base the record picker, which allows you filter and sort the field.

It’s great that you can apply sorts and filters, but unless you really trim down the columns, it can be really hard to read for end users. Beyond that, they may not understand what data is displayed in the list and given that each record displays all its data on one line, it can be hard to match up values to compare them.

In addition, our users told us they expected to search through these records to find what they were looking for, but our simple record dropdown doesn’t support that. For search, we need to go into the record picker pop-up.

In field properties, you can configure this relationship to always use our record picker pop-up but getting to it requires more clicks and takes the user out of the context of the record they’re editing.

What we found in talking to customers was that their teams needed a faster way to search their data.

After seeing all this, we got to work. Presenting the new Quick Base Type-Ahead Search Picker:

If your app builder has chosen to display only one field to pick records on, we’re now going to present a fast, searchable picker, very much like the new field picker we rolled out back in spring or the user picker we've have.

If your app builder has chosen a report or the standard record picker to select from, you’ll see a multicolumn picker, able to display up to nine fields of relevant data, with each column labeled so users clearly can see what they’re picking from.

We load the first 50 results automatically, so users can browse. As you search, the list updates in real time, pulling in more records and highlighting the matching terms, very much like our user field type.

This new picker will be rolling out to all users in the coming months. First, I'll explain how to create a "Save & next tab" button. Then, with slight modification, I'll show "Save & same tab".

[1] On the form properties, do not check "Show Save & close and Cancel buttons at the end of this form" and do check "Show save & keep working choice"

[2] Create a rich-text-formula field called, say, "Custom Save and Next Tab". Temporarily, you can fill it the text "Save & next tab". Eventually, after completing the steps below, it will contain a custom Page and several custom Variables, like this:

[customButtonScript1]
& "saveAndNextTab.js"
& [customButtonScript2]
& [customButtonStyleSKW]
& "Save & next tab"
& [customButtonEnd]

[3] In the settings for you app, click on Variables and add one called "customButtonScript1". You can use a different name, if you wish, but be sure to use that name in the first like of the rich-text-formula in step [2]. Whatever you call it, the variable should contains the following. The quotes are important. However, remove the spaces in h t t p s, use your company's setting for "yourdomain" and your app's id instead of "yyy999zzz"

<a href='javascript:($.getScript("h t t p s://yourdomain.quickbase.com/db/yyy999zzz?a=dbpage&pagename=

[4] Next, in the settings for you app, add a Page called "saveAndNextTab.js" (or another name you prefer, provided you use it in the second line of the rich-text-formula field"). The page should contains exactly this:

var nextTabLink=$("li.ui-tabs-selected").next("[style!='display:none']").children("a");
$("#saveAndKeepWorkingMenuOption").click();
var noErrorDialog=$('#qbDialog').length==0;
if( noErrorDialog ){
$(nextTabLink).click();
location.assign('#navTop');
};

In words, this script is (a) finding the currently selected tab, then the next that is not hidden, and it's name; then (b) clicking the standard "Save & keep working" button, emulating a user; and (c) checking for a pop-up error message, e.g., about failing to supply a required field; and finally (d) clicking the next non-hidden tab-name and scrolling up to where the tab-row will be visible.

[5] Back on your app's settings, add another Variable to close the script. Call it "customButtonScript2" if you are sticking to the naming in step [2]. It must contain exactly this:

"));void(0);

[6] Next you need to style the custom button. I prefer doing so as follow, to make it resemble the standard save buttons. Add another Variable in you app's settings called "customButtonStyleSKW" which contains this:

' class='Vibrant Tall' style='font-size:14px; color:white; background:#6BBD57; white-space:nowrap;'>

[7] Finally, in add one more Variable in your app's settings, called "customButtonEnd", containing simply:

</a>

Of course, you could just use "</a>" as the final line of your rich-text-formula field, but I prefer the additional Variable for readability ... and just in case I ever want to make some sort of global change for all my custom button's endings.

[8] Oh, and to get this button on your forms, add it at the end of every tab. (On the last tab, it will stay there, after not finding any next tab.) Naturally, you will want to use an empty "alternate label" for that row of the form, and set it for add and edit modes only.

To modify this method for "Save & same tab", the main change is in the first line of the script in step [4]. Use this:

var sameTabLink=$("li.ui-tabs-selected").children("a");

Also, later in the script, use:

$(sameTabLink).click();

question rejected 1 4 2 comment http://m.getsatisfaction.com/topics/7809048 7809048 Batch Update "Display As" Property 2018-11-03T13:17:39Z 2018-10-24T19:21:46Z Nick Wade http://m.getsatisfaction.com/people/9830489 https://d2r1vs3d9006ap.cloudfront.net/public/uploaded_images/11338485/NWade_Headshot_medium.jpg nick_wade_ibqvh91vs050b It is my understanding that you cannot use the QuickBase API to change a field's type. However, API_SetFieldProperties has been quite the time saver when working with large groups of similar fields.

One thing I haven't been able to do, is find a way to update the "Display As" field property via the QuickBase API. Is there a reason this field is not updatable via the API?

Or is the API parameter named as such that it would not be readily apparent?

Thanks! question active 5 3 1 comment
