So far I am able to create two reports one for banking and other for investments (based on Investment transaction report). I am looking for ways to combine these 2.I was able to create the investment report by having a filter on Memo (CONTRIBUTION) and the action on each transaction as BoughtX. But this report doesnt allow any banking accounts to be added so I can add the Salary category. Any thoughts ? question bank_accounts_downloading_and_categorizing bank_accounts_downloading_and_categorizing, windows active 5 5 1 comment http://m.getsatisfaction.com/topics/7777166/replies/19692420 http://m.getsatisfaction.com/topics/7777166 19692420 QPW responded to "Monthly Savings report with investments" 2018-08-13T01:00:19Z 2018-08-13T01:00:19Z QPW http://m.getsatisfaction.com/people/8342820 https://d2r1vs3d9006ap.cloudfront.net/public/uploaded_images/10875282/original_medium.gif qpw I assume you are using the Paycheck reminder. If that is the case then the Salary category is in fact your gross pay, and your contribution would actually a withdraw.

One would believe that if you bring up a banking spending report (Itemized Categories) you could just select _401Contrib and see it. But even though it is marked like that for internal use on the tax calculations, it will not show up on the spending report.

To see it you need to select the 401K account name in the CATEGORY list box. And it will show up as a transfer (negative amount).

And negative is correct, it is reduction on your gross amount.

If you want "net pay" + "401K" then you just make a spending report that includes your gross pay (Salary category) and then include all the categories that that are taken out of that pay, EXCEPT for the 401K one. 1 http://m.getsatisfaction.com/topics/7777166/replies/19692559 http://m.getsatisfaction.com/topics/7777166 19692559 cool_anil responded to "Monthly Savings report with investments" 2018-08-13T02:46:35Z 2018-08-13T02:46:35Z cool_anil http://m.getsatisfaction.com/people/5134454 https://www.gravatar.com/avatar/124b62fa1e8dc68981e16e246bffae5f?d=identicon&s=55&r=PG anil_4834977 Thanks @QPV. Unfortunately I dont use Paycheck reminder. The salary comes into the bank account as a 'Salary' category. 0 http://m.getsatisfaction.com/topics/7777166/replies/19692909 http://m.getsatisfaction.com/topics/7777166/replies/19692559 19692909 QPW responded to "Monthly Savings report with investments" 2018-08-13T07:36:06Z 2018-08-13T07:36:06Z QPW http://m.getsatisfaction.com/people/8342820 https://d2r1vs3d9006ap.cloudfront.net/public/uploaded_images/10875282/original_medium.gif qpw So that would be your net salary.

But then how do you account for your 401K contribution?

I see you used a BoughtX, but that means the money has to come from another account. And that account had to somehow get money in it to account for the 401K money that is going to be transferred out.

That "deposit" of the 401K contribution in the other account could be used on the spending report. 0 http://m.getsatisfaction.com/topics/7777166/replies/19693094 http://m.getsatisfaction.com/topics/7777166 19693094 cool_anil responded to "Monthly Savings report with investments" 2018-08-13T12:14:24Z 2018-08-13T12:14:24Z cool_anil http://m.getsatisfaction.com/people/5134454 https://www.gravatar.com/avatar/124b62fa1e8dc68981e16e246bffae5f?d=identicon&s=55&r=PG anil_4834977 Thanks I will try that. if this works, I can track my contribution. But there is the employer contribution into 401K that doesnt go out of my salary. In my Fidelity 401K account in Quicken, there are transactions (that has a memo of CONTRIBUTION) every month for my contribution and employer contribution. I was hoping to somehow to use these monthly transactions from the 401K in a spending report. 0 http://m.getsatisfaction.com/topics/7777166/replies/19693273 http://m.getsatisfaction.com/topics/7777166 19693273 Jim Harman responded to "Monthly Savings report with investments" 2018-08-13T15:15:37Z 2018-08-13T15:15:37Z Jim Harman http://m.getsatisfaction.com/people/8699293 https://d2r1vs3d9006ap.cloudfront.net/public/uploaded_images/10921651/photo_medium.jpg jim_harman One advantage of using the Paycheck wizard with Gross amount tracking to set up and enter your paychecks is that it uses Quicken's built-in Categories for your income and deductions. I realize it may be a pain to set up and may cause inconsistencies if you have been using different Categories up to now, but this will automatically make things flow to the correct places elsewhere in Quicken.

For example, it handles the employer 401(k) match with a special Income category of _401EmployerContrib with no associated tax line item (because it is not taxable)

Then when you receive a paycheck, there will be one transaction in your bank account that has your gross pay and a lot of splits to account for the deductions.

It appears that with this setup, the Banking Transaction report set up as QPW describes above to include your main account and the Salary and Employee Benefit income categories and the Tax categories that are used for your withholding, but not any of the 401(k) related categories, will show your net pay + your 401(k) contributions + the employer match, because the 401(k) stuff is included in the gross pay. 1
