(Unless you have it pointed to a service like iCloud or Dropbox.) And it typically takes just a few seconds, not hours. I suggest you do let Quicken make backups, and then let your Time Machine make backups of all the backups. you never know if your Mac, or your Time Machine drive, will suddenly die; so the more backups you have in multiple places, the safer you are.

You can control whether Quicken backs up, and the location of the backups, in Preferences.

Backup when you quite the program should have nothing to do with updates to Quicken. Some Quicken updates require a change to the data file, and in those cases, Quicken will automatically make a backup of your data file before proceeding, in case something goes wrong. But that process doesn't happen too often -- certainly not every couple weeks.

Answer @RickO's question about what version you're using before we try to troubleshoot further. 0 http://m.getsatisfaction.com/topics/7793157/replies/19759381 http://m.getsatisfaction.com/topics/7793157 19759381 Quicken Harold responded to "After I update on the iMac, the auto back-up locks up the program for hours." 2018-09-16T12:13:39Z 2018-09-16T12:13:39Z Quicken Harold http://m.getsatisfaction.com/people/9419664 https://d2r1vs3d9006ap.cloudfront.net/public/uploaded_images/11208731/ScreenShot2018-01-09at7.04.25AM_medium.png quicken_harold The post from a spammer pretending to be me was just removed from this thread.
